Guide to WI-FI in Hotels : Which ADSL for hotels

We finish this guide to WI-FI in hotels with some basic considerations regarding the type of connection the hotel should have.
ADSL connections today have very high download speeds: in some cases as fast as 20Mbit, even if your ADSL is more likely just to reach the classic 7 Mbit for download.
This kind of speed can be considered acceptable in a hotel. Supposing, for example, that ten guests are connected at the same time. Each one will have 700 Kbit available, which corresponds to a download speed of around 80 KByte per second. Such a speed is perfectly sufficient for classic internet services, such as navigation, email, chatting, etc.
Things change, however, if the hotel guests try to download larger files. In this case, one single guest could occupy almost all the bandwidth, considerably slowing down browsing for all the other hotel guests. To avoid this problem, it is essential to have hotspot software such as Softvision Explorer which limits the bandwidth available to each single guest. With this you can equally distribute download speed to all the hotel guests.
Another important thing to consider, in regard to ADSL in hotels, is the asymmetric nature of ADSL connections: generally upload speeds are much slower than download speeds. 7 Mbit ADSL connections are not normally faster than 500 Kbit per second. This limitation makes limiting the band-width of the guests' WI-FI connections even more important. In fact, a guest could easily occupy the entire upload bandwidth of the system simply by sending an email with a very bulky attachment.
Another solution to this problem would be to provide the hotel with an HDSL connection, which unlike ADSL, has an upload speed identical to its download speed.
