Guide to WI-FI in Hotels: WI-FI Hotspots

The term Hotspot normally refers to an entire area where you can connect to the internet without the use of cables, by means of a specific physical network protocol (the most common standard is WI-FI), through a service provided by a provider. More precisely, it is the term which indicates an area where a wireless network access provider allows you to connect.
It is now possible to find these kinds of internet access hotspots in restaurants, railway stations, airports, libraries, hotels and many other public places.

In regard to cost, there are many different ways access is provided; in Italy it is rare to find these kinds of internet access points that are genuinely free of charge. Most public businesses charge token fees for the use of their hotspots, and these depend on the customer's connection time rather than the actual use of online resources. For this reason, and restrictive legislation that has only recently been abolished, this type of service has seen quite a recent, limited growth, compared to many other places in Europe.

The WI-FI technological standard is the result of the provisions of IEEE 802.11, which is a set of standards expressly designed to normalize wireless local area networks (WLAN).
